Kara’s Search for Public Service from Boston to Fort Collins, and Back Again

NBC Boston team at the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

Hi all! My name is Kara and I am a Communications Professional based in Boston, MA.  I began my career in the city working at NBC News as a Community and Public Relations Coordinator, where I found great joy in partnering with nonprofit organizations to produce events throughout the state. This led me to accept a position at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where I enhanced my communication skills by planning national and international events, educational symposiums for physicians, creating patient education seminars and pamphlets, and developing marketing materials to showcase the services offered at the hospital. My passion is using communication platforms and planning events that drive positive change to the lives of those in my community and beyond.

While I was born and raised in Boston I spent the last four years living in Fort Collins, Colorado, with my fiancé, Colin, and our golden pup, Rae. The three of us had many adventures in Colorado and enjoyed much of the beauty that state has to offer, from sand boarding at the Great National Sand Dunes, camping at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and getting engaged at the Steamboat Springs Ski Resort mountain top at sunset on Christmas Eve. Our time there will forever hold a special place in my heart. While living in Colorado, I further developed my career working at Colorado State University’s Translational Medicine Institute, developing outreach and communication campaigns for the university’s medical continuing education program.

Aside from the beauty of Colorado, I experienced first hand the disadvantages of living in a state with a serious and growing air quality problem, failing year after year to meet federal standards for air that’s healthy and safe to breathe. Several days I would wake up to alerts on my phone stating the air quality was “hazardous” with messaging prompting community members to stay indoors. This is caused by both smoke, ash, and soot from ongoing wildfires as well as vehicle and industry pollution spiking to unsafe levels. Denver is now ranked first in air pollution among major cities of the world.

As my family began to grow back east, our plans to move back to Massachusetts were solidified. I began to search for a new job opportunity, knowing I wanted to find a new role at a company that was working to impact a positive change in the world. I found REACH Strategies in my search and once I read about their mission to “Support organizations and introduce consumers to a wide range of emerging clean technologies that invoke positive change for the betterment of the world we live in,” I knew I wanted to be a part of this team of change-makers. Flash forward, I have now been with REACH for four months. I love that we get to connect with organizations across the nation and partner to produce campaigns and events educating communities on the environmental and economic benefits of electric transportation. I am thankful for the journey I have been on and excited to continue to grow and develop my skill set here at REACH.

Return to the East Coast- Beach walk

Returning back to my home state has been a joy, I have loved being able to spend time with my nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Colin and I spend our free time exploring the charm of New England with fresh eyes and finding new trails, parks, restaurants, and shops to explore. I aim to make a positive impact in the world in large and small ways. My advice is to always follow the golden rule, but not just treating others the way you want to be treated, treat all creatures, animals, and our earth with that same respect. Don’t just leave things the way you found them, improve them! It is up to US to make our world better for future generations. The best way to predict the future is to create it. I am proud to be a part of an organization that strives to continually improve the lives of others and make a difference in the world.
